Veteran Pacer of Pakistan, Sohail Tanvir quoted that taking the wicket of “Rahul Dravid” during the Delhi test match in 2007 was the moment for me to remember for life. Left-arm fast pacer also said in YouTube show “Cric Cast” it’s quite unlucky for me to not play for the Pakistan team in the test format for a long time.
The most difficult bowler to ever faced by any batsman has reflected up his test debut When he got selected for test match over Umar Gul due to Injury.
“Initially I wasn’t part of the squad. I was part of the ODI team, T20s were not there at the time. I performed really well in ODIs. Umar Gul got injured accidentally, I don’t remember what injury he had.”
I am fortunate and lucky enough to get the wicket of “Rahul Dravid” on the pretty similar way of delivery bowled by “Wasim Akhram” to get him out.
“The way I got Dravid out, I still say it was the ball of my life. I remember Wasim Bhai dismissing Dravid in a similar manner. It was the same length and line delivery. It pitched outside leg stump and rattled the off-stump. And the same happened with my delivery. That was a dream ball for me.”
It was the special moment for me or any player in the world to play against some of the greatest batsmen in the world like Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and Sachin Tendulkar. I was quite happy and at the top of cloud nine when I break the defense of Rahul Dravid and get him out.
“Bowling against greats like Dravid, Sachin, Laxman and Ganguly and that too in India was special. They are people who have scored thousands of runs against the red ball, they have so many achievements. Especially if you talk about Rahul Dravid, he was called the Wall, and breaching his defense was very difficult.”
It was quite shocking for me to get the call from selectors although it’s my belief and determination which has helped to do better in the match where I got three wickets.
“Being a youngster and that too a surprise call, I wasn’t prepared to be honest at that time to play the test match as my name was not there initially. But I will repeat that my self-belief and confidence helped me throughout my career. They are also in the first Test, I bowled really well. I guess I dismissed 3 batsmen on the trot – Ganguly, Dravid and then I think Harbhajan Singh. I brought the Pakistan team back into that Test.”
Short cricketing career – Sohail Tanvir
I am quite unhappy that I haven’t represented my country for a long time in test cricket. Although people believed I am only a good ODIs player then over test player I think they haven’t seen my test bowling spells.
“Unfortunately, my Test career ended there. Even now when I sit and think, I feel I could have played a lot more Test cricket for Pakistan. People call me a T20 specialist or white-ball cricketer, but nobody knew about my strengths, what I delivered, or what I was capable of with the red ball. If you see my stats or you ask people who played against me with a red ball, then you would get an idea.”
There was a tour of New Zealand where My performance was exceptionally good in warm-up matches but still I didn’t the opportunity to perform in the test matches.
“Unfortunately, I could not get that many chances. After that, I was a part of the squad for a couple of series. I went to New Zealand and played a side match. I got 4 wickets against their President’s XI, all their main players were playing in that match. That was my comeback after surgery.”
Sohail Tanvir represented Pakistan in 2 tests only, both test were against India during the 2007 tour. In the first test at Kotla, he picked up 3 wickets, and in the second innings, he was wicketless.
While in the second test he got 2 wickets of Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik. Although, he never got a chance to perform after these two tests. He represented Pakistan in 62 ODIs and 57 T20s where he picked 71 wickets in ODIs and 54 wickets in T20s. He was also the part winning team Rajasthan Royals in the first season of Cash-rich league IPL. He was quite impressive in that season with 22 wickets under his belt and hit the winning the runs also.
