Veteran Indian Coach Aunshuman Gaekwad opined that the modern-day Indian team under the aggressive captain, Virat Kohli is arguably the greatest ever in the Indian cricket history. After taking the role of full-time test captaincy in 2015 and in ODIs in 2017, Virat helped team India to reach the top ICC test rankings, along with that team India clinch the series in the west indies and Australia also.
Apart from that, the current Indian bowling line up with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh is probably the most lethal bowling department in the world at present.
Gaekwad represented India for 12 years from 1975 to 1987, believes that modern Indian cricket team has the best team in the history of cricket.
“If you ask me, I believe that he (Virat Kohli) has the best possible team in Indian history,” Gaekwad told SportsKeeda in an interview. “Bowling, batting, the balance of the team is the best. Up till now, we had no pace bowlers. We had Karsan, Roger, Kapil, but they didn’t win matches for you all the time. Today, they have a battery of pacers with options, and they are winning matches for you.”
While under the tenure of Virat Kohli, team India reached 2017 champions trophy final and 2019 world cup semi-final. While as always Virat took the aerial route and led by the leader on many occasions but Gaekwad said the instincts to turn out impossible things to possible of Virat Completely makes him different in the league. While Gaekwad was the coach of the Indian cricket team in the late 1990s era often compare the captaincy of Virat with Sachin Tendulkar.
“It is only a question of time. I had a word with Sachin Tendulkar when he left the captaincy, I tried to convince him but he felt that he is giving 110 per cent, and why can’t the others (do the same),” Gaekwad said. “As a captain, one must understand that every individual is different. You can give 110, but others can give only 90, 95 per cent. How to convert that into 100 per cent? That is what we need to work on.”
