WI vs NZ 2020, 1st Test, Hamiltion – 3 Things That Went Wrong For West

There it is if team has lost the test match on the day 4 after winning the toss and decided to bowl first there needs to some criticisms that the losing captain has to be face. After the disaster T20l series West Indies (WI) keep that momentum into the test series and lost the first test match by 134 runs and an innings.

Although West Indies sides is comparatively weaker to New Zealand line-up but still they have the player like Darren Bravo or Roston Chase (who can on his day put the opposition at the back foot). There were times when players like Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul single handily took this team to victories against the quality A-list sides of his times.

But in the last one decade the players from West Indies cricket like to focus more on the formats like T20ls apart from the red-ball cricket (Test cricket) which at once in the 70s or 80s they were at the complete top with the players like Clive Lloyd, Sir Garfield Sobers, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding and Joel Garner. Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul were the last two best batsman ever produced by West Indies cricket history and since then there is hardly a batsman who can the dependable captain along with batsman.

In the first test match it’s complete one side game as the New Zealand dominated the game from batting to bowling to put the opposition into the shambles without have to bat in the second Innings. Kane Williamson register the career best score of 251 to helped New Zealand to post 519 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the first innings. While West Indies have failed to cross 250 runs Mark in both of their innings and lost the match before the five sessions to be played in a match. Having said, let us take a look at the three things that went wrong for West Indies.

WEST INDIES DECISION TO BOWL FIRST BACKFIRED

It’s hard to believe the strategy of a captain when he is playing with complete in experience team either in batting or bowling. The first test match fresh start without having any pressure West Indies should bat first against the home team to take the advantage of batting first while letting their in experience players to used about the conditions then to bat in the second Innings with pressure. While New Zealand was invited to bat first and they have taken full advantage of it and take the scoreboard to 519 runs for the loss 7 Wickets before declared the first innings. Kane Williamson (251), Tom Latham (86) and Kyle Jamieson (51) were played the crucial knocks from New Zealand team.

In response West Indies has bowled out at 138 runs in the first innings while Tim Southee picked up 4 wickets along Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson shared 2-2 wickets each to wrapped up the West Indies first innings. The follow on was enforced by New Zealand captain and West Indies has failed to cross the follow on before befuddled at 247 runs in their second innings. Blackwood (104) and Joseph (86) were the highest scorer from West Indies in the second Innings. From New Zealand Neil Wagner picked up 4 Wickets along with Kyle Jamieson took 2 wickets. Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Daryl Mitchell shared 1-1-1 wickets each to wrapped up the second Innings of West Indies and take the 1-0 lead in the series.

ABSURD BOWLING LINE-UP OF WEST INDIES

The most scary side of West Indies current team. There were times when players like Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh single handily put the opposition into the shambles with their supreme talent of fast bowling. Teams were scared to play against West Indies cricket in the 70s to mid 2000 era. But with the current team there is hardly a fast bowler who can play the role of front line bowler in the team against any test playing nation either in red-ball cricket or white-ball cricket.

After putting the New Zealand to bat first West Indies bowlers were complete absurd and couldn’t even take the 10 wickets of New Zealand in the first innings before they declared the innings at 519 runs. In the test cricket team can’t going to win the match without the quality bowling pairs either as fast bowler or as spinners. West Indies cricket don’t have the both and the result was obvious hope they will come with the strategy in the next test match to try to level the series.

WEAK BATTING LINE-UP

Considering the fact West Indies cricket team don’t have good bowling line-up it means they have keep their batting line-up very strong to balance the equation. But they don’t have both which makes the situation very difficult for West Indies team. In the both the innings of first test match there was no player from top order of west Indies team to score runs. In the second Innings Blackwood (104) and Joseph (86) put some fight for West Indies team but couldn’t team over the victory without getting support from other players.

It’s hard to believe that it is same West Indies cricket from where players like Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul once have came out as trendsetter in the times of transition period. But with the current team there is hardly a player who can bat like Brian Lara class to put the team back into the driver seat.
